Whitespace: PFAs In Your Blood

In Volume 1, I wrote about forever chemicals (PFAs) that are in millions of products including bubbly water drinks like La Croix and Bubly, cosmetics, diapers, carpet, clothing etc.  Many of you wrote me to say a combination of "Ick", "Ack", "Gross" and "We've quit those products".  You're welcome and I'm truly sorry.

I was not surprised to read that researchers have found that PFAs actually accumulate in our blood over time.

Reminder: Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAs) are a class of more than 4,700 human-made chemicals that do not break down over time.  Select studies indicate that PFAs cause increased blood pressure, thyroid disease, increased cholesterol levels, liver damage, kidney cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, testicular cancer, increased miscarriage risk,  lower birth weight, obesity and reduced response to vaccines.

Delightful stuff to say the least.  PFAs are everywhere in the environment and are estimated to be polluting most of the world's drinking water supply.   It's entirely possible and highly probably that you could receive a medical diagnosis in the future that was caused by PFAs.

Back to PFAs in blood; this news is more than a little troubling.  Health Canada and Environment Canada are teaming up and have proposed a ban on ALL human-made chemicals under CEPA.  This is big news when you consider the implications of removing PFAs as a component from millions of everyday products and the corresponding commercial opportunity.

*There is a clear whitespace opportunity to develop replacement substances that are natural, non-toxic and biodegradable to help speed up the elimination of PFAs.

The plastic wrap industry is going through exactly this generational change with companies like Great Wrap pioneering plant based plastic wrap that's biodegradable.  It's early innings in this product category but several giant new companies will be built by focusing on being the replacement for PFAs.  For anyone who's interested, that's a venture that we'd like to build at Future State.  Reach out, say hi and we can chat over a PFA-free Spindrift.
